Liaoning has a population of over 40m, its capital city is Shenyang and it is the northernmost coastal province of the People’s Republic of China. Liaoning has much to offer from a birdwatching perspective being home to over 450 species of birds of which around 40 are globally threatened. Liaoning is located on the East Asian Flyway where millions of migratory shorebirds pass through annually during the migration seasons, and as such this province is an extremely important refueling area for shorebirds. Dandong National Nature Reserve, located in the northern Yellow Sea, is home to intertidal mudflats, where some 250,000 shorebirds pass through on their northern migration, supporting 50 species of shorebirds. In addition, the Liaoning Peninsular, particularly during the autumn, hosts huge numbers of raptors that gather using the peninsular as a jumping-off point before crossing the Bohai Bay.
