Taiwan lies 130 km east of mainland China. The island is 400 km long and 150 km wide, and at 36,000 sq. km is equivalent in size to Belgium. Taiwan is a marvelous place for birdwatching, with over 600 recorded species, of which 23 are endemics, and stunningly verdant mountains. In addition to being rich in endemics, Taiwan is also a key stopover on the East Asian north-south flyway. My birding trip started in the North of the island, before heading south, the main destinations being Dasyueshan Forest, Yushan National Park and Alishan Mountain.
